Tattoo Aftercare
Your tattoo was carefully created by a professional. To ensure a top-quality tattoo, the rest is up to you. Following these simple care instructions for the healing process of your tattoo should ensure maximum results and lessen the chance of any error on your part.
The Basics
After 2-4 hours, you can remove the wrap. Ensure your hands are clean, wash your tattoo well with liquid soap and warm water, pat dry with a fresh paper towel, and let it air dry.
Once dry, with clean hands, apply a thin layer of ointment to the tattoo. (A thin layer means A THIN LAYER; your tattoo doesn't need to swim in ointment—enough so that the tattoo is not dry is enough.)
After applying ointment, you should re-wrap your tattoo in fresh cling wrap. THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT.
Essentially, it will help prevent infections and, most importantly, aid in HEALING. Keeping your tattoo clean while it is healing is of utmost importance; hence, keeping it covered for the first few days of healing will ensure the best outcome for your new tattoo.
Why wrapping a tattoo is better
Wounds need moisture to heal; leaving a wound uncovered may dry out new surface cells, which can slow the healing process.
By trapping the body's natural healing fluids, your tattoo stays hydrated (moist: hence the need for less ointment) and heals quickly and efficiently with reduced scabbing. Keeping wounds covered allows new skin and other cells to regenerate, as well as effectively protecting the area from dirt, germs, and further injury.
The Following Days
WASH (with warm soapy water), APPLY (a THIN layer of ointment), and WRAP (re-wrap your tattoo with clean cling wrap) both morning and night for 7-10 days or until healed.
If you choose to stop wrapping after 7-10 days, make certain that you continue to wash and apply ointment for at least 4 weeks, both morning and night, and any time your tattoo has been exposed to dirt, sweat, or outside elements.
IMPORTANT TIPS to keep your tattoo looking the best it can:
- Keep your tattoo CLEAN.
- Try to avoid wearing items that may rub on the tattoo.
- Stay out of the ocean, waterways, and/or pools for at least 2 weeks.
- Try to avoid having your tattoo exposed to the sun FOREVER (wear sunscreen).
DO NOT PICK AT YOUR TATTOO WHILE IT IS HEALING.
For our Tattoo Aftercare, we suggest: Lucas PawPaw Ointment or Dr. Pickles. (but you can use whatever you have used previously that works for you)
